Hey, I Got This!

Recently, a member of my church passed away, and our senior pastor was away.

This left me to manage a few things until his return. I had a very limited role, but one area became a way bigger deal than any of us originally anticipated.

That area was regarding the audio/visual needs of the family - everything from what equipment they wanted/needed to who would actually run it on the day of the memorial service.

There were a lot of phone calls and emails back and forth with various staff members and volunteers before we finally got it all straight.

One of our members who has a very basic understanding of our audio-visual system was concerned about the arrangements and specifically who would deal with the family in organizing these logistics.

During one of our conversations, I told her, “Hey, I got this!” This phrase has now become the slogan we pass back and forth.

When someone says, “Hey, I got this!” it is like a weight taken off your shoulders.

In this scenario, I happened to be the one who said it, but I know a ton of stories about others who have taken the load for someone else or for me personally. It is a comfort to know that someone cares enough to try and help and eliminate a burden for you.

I remember hearing about a time in my previous church’s history (long before me or the recently retired pastor) when one of the deacons offered to handle a particularly difficult situation for the pastor at that time.

That pastor refused, and being unfamiliar with the individual or background, he made the situation worse than it had to be.

Sometimes, I feel that we can all try and handle a situation ourselves and in reality, just make it worse. Sometimes we need help. Sometimes we need to ask for someone else to take the load off of us.

Many people probably think this statement is a sign of weakness or fear, but I’d like to suggest it is a sign of wisdom!

Many of my mentors over the years have tried to teach me this lesson – maybe I am finally starting to get it.

In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Jesus reminds us that He and the Father are one. He reminds us that He is capable of dealing with anything and everything we could possibly bring to Him.

I have often heard (and said myself) “believe in the power of prayer”.

I recently heard someone say it another way, “Stop believing in the power of prayer, and start believing in the God who answers prayer!”

Maybe it is a matter of semantics.

Regardless, sometimes we can ask someone to help us and they may or may not. Or we may ask the wrong person.

This verse reminds that we can ask Jesus for His help and His comfort and He will handle it. Jesus says to us, “Hey, I got this!”
