Remember Who God Is

One of my favorite parts of being at my new church is seeing the kids in our preschool and Christian School. I have spent a lot of time with them over the past nine months and really grown to love these kids.

Some of the greatest moments of my weeks are when I visit the Christian school and hear them learning Latin, practicing math stations, singing songs to learn the countries of Africa, or reading.

Their teacher, Mrs. Sumner, is one of the greatest teachers I have ever seen!

She makes learning fun. She holds these kindergarten and 1st grade students accountable. She allows them to make mistakes and teaches them how to fix them. She allows them to experiment and have fun. And she loves these kids and their families.

She has made learning fun for these kids and incorporates their parents into different aspects of the school allowing them to teach the kids about science, animals, cooking, and pretty much anything else the parents may have some expertise in.

All this is to set-up the greatest moments I have experienced with them – when the kids are learning about God. Many of these kids come from unchurched backgrounds and we have the honor (and obligation) to point these kids and their families to Christ.

This past week, I walked in on prayer time. Mrs. Sumner was teaching them about the veil that tore in the Temple when Jesus was crucified and how it illustrates that Jesus has given us access to God twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week with no need for animal sacrifices.

Then she allowed them to go around the room and draw pictures of who God is and what God has done for them. There were some great drawings with even greater meaning from these young children.

This event reminded me of how important it is for us to remember who God is and what God has done for us.

Many of us spend so much time thinking too highly of ourselves and questioning God’s sovereignty in our lives that we simply forget Him or dismiss Him.

When we remember what God has done for us it serves as a reminder of His love, His grace, His mercy, and His call for us.

Deuteronomy chapter 7 verse 9 says, “Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.

God is faithful to those who love Him. God will forgive us if we ask Him. God loves us. God has created each and every one of us. God has called us to join Him in His work in this world.

God has called us to follow Him and be obedient to Him. He has called us to make disciples of all nations. God has done great things in history (i.e. creating the world from nothing).

Genesis 1:16 reminds us that “God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.” (emphasis mine).

I love this small reference because it shows us that something as massive and numerous as stars – yeah God made that too. And God has done great things in your lives too.

Sometimes we need to remember who God is, and this week I was reminded by these young kids to call out God’s greatness.

Remember who He is. Remember what He has done. Remember His promises. Remember His grace. Remember His mercy. Remember His power. Remember that God wants a relationship with me (and you).

This week, I encourage you to simply remember who God is and what He has done for you!

Anyway, I was just thinking…
