This Day In History

One of the radio stations I listen to frequently has a regular segment titled, “This Day In History,” which recognizes events, moments, and people’s birthdays or deaths. One recent example was highlighting the birth of Elvis Presley.

I have always liked history, so maybe I am prone to like these kinds of segments, but regardless, these segments are a tremendous contribution to our lives.

They remind us of major historical events that we might dismiss otherwise.

They remind us of significant discoveries in exploration and science.

They remind us of people who have come before us.

And this is especially interesting to think about around Christmastime when we commemorate the coming of our Savior into this world.

But as we have now entered a New Year, another interesting way to internalize this idea is to think about how you remember what God has done for you over the years (or at least the last year in particular).

In Deuteronomy chapter 6 verses 8 and 9 it says “Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

Here we find Moses giving sort of his farewell speech as leader of the Israelites, and he is reminding them of the commandments God gave them. He is imploring them to remember who God is and what God has done for them.

Moses knows the culture the Israelites are about to walk into and the temptations and false gods they will encounter in the Promised Land.

Moses is encouraging the people to internalize and take seriously the commands of God.

There are some Jews today who have taken these verses literally and wear the commandments of God in small boxes called tefillin around their arms and heads as a constant reminder.

There are Jewish families who have verses inscribed on the walls and door frames of their houses so every time they enter or depart they remember the commands of God.

But what does that mean for you and me as we begin 2021?

One of the best ways I have found to keep the commandments of God is to remember who God is and what He has done for me because when I remember specific events and situations God has brought me through it is easier to follow Him.

Think about it…

God, who freed from you bondage. God, who gave you food when you had none. God, who fought your battles for you. God, who kept His promise. God, who restored your marriage. God, who healed your loved one. God, who gave you peace after the loss of a loved one.

When you remember that He has done things like that (in your life), it is easier to obey Him.

Therefore, in 2021, I encourage you to reflect on “This Day In History” but not historical events. Rather think on the events and activity of God in your life. 

My prayer is that you find it easier to listen, trust, and obey Him this year!
